In 1992, the railroad above this
subway was still a busy trans-continental link in the Canadian National Railway (CNR) system, the Beachburg sub-division. By 2017, the rails are long gone. The subway was built for the safety of the users of the National Capital Commission's bike path, the Watts Creek Pathway. Before 1992, there was a small yet typical railroad bridge here. There is a date stone on both sides of the underpass.
In 1915, the railroad that would eventually be known as the Beachburg sub was built on a man-made embankment. The railroad was raised high enough so that a bridge could be used to cross the older, nearby railroad to the south. The Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway (eventually known as the Renfrew sub-division of the CNR) was already in place in 1893. Both railroads were created before the CNR existed so in 1915 they were still competitors. The older railroad had first rights and the creation of a bridge crossing rather than a level-crossing intersection was required by the younger railroad.
