As the plaque reads:

Preserve our Heritage.

The old cart trail from from Fort Walsh to Wood Mountain once passed close to this spot.

It was an important link in the long chain to patrol trails established by the NWMP along the International Boundary between Manitoba and the Rocky Mountains.

The first patrols from Fort Walsh after 1875 passed south of the White Mud River in this region. But when the Eastend Police Post was established in 1878 a section of the trail was mapped north of the river.

Parts of the river were used in earlier times by traders and buffalo hunters and by some of the first explores to visit the Cypress Hills. Later the trail was used by stockmen and homesteaders who pioneered between 1890 and 1920.

It was the first 'Highway' through these hills and plains.
