The Hospital Bridge, originally called the Downieville Steel Bridge (due to its status as the town’s first steel truss bridge) was constructed in 1908. It survived the disastrous 1937 flood which destroyed the other four bridges in town. The bridge continued to be used until 1980 when it was replaced by a two lane concrete bridge to accomodate heavy logging trucks. The bridge is now open only to pedestrian use.
