Rusk's memorial was erected in 1894 by the State of Texas and is made of gray granite in the shape of an obelisk on a pedestal.

On one side of the base of the monument is the seal of the State of Texas and the words "Patriot," "Soldier," "Statesman," "Jurist."
On the other it says:
Erected by the State of Texas to the Memory of General Thomas J. Rusk who fought for her liberty at San Jacinto. Born in South Carolina Dec. 5, 1808. Died at Nacogdoches, Texas July 29, 1857. He lived for Texas
