Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin wurde am 8. Juli 1838 in Konstanz am Bodensee geboren. Er studierte Maschinenbau, Chemie und Staatswissenschaften. Graf von Zeppelin diente im Militär des Königreichs Württemberg und wurde 1858 Kavallerieoffizier. Er unternahm militärische Studienreisen ins Ausland und dort erlebte er erstmalig den Einsatz von Heißluftballons zu militärischen Aufklärungszwecken, ein Erlebnis, das von Zeppelin weiteren Lebensweg prägen sollte. Graf von Zeppelin nahm 1866 am Deutschen Krieg und 1870/71 am Deutsch-Französischen Krieg teil. Seit 1873 befasste er sich mit der Entwicklung von Luftschiffen.
Das Denkmal steht vor dem Graf-Zeppelin-Haus, welches ebenfalls nach ihm benannt wurde.
Es wird heute als Kultur- und Kongresszentrum der Stadt Friedrichshafen genutzt.
Mit einem Fernglas und einem Stock in der anderen Hand, blickt die Statue nach Südosten auf den Hafen und den Bodensee. Das Podest ist schlicht aus einem Stein, die Figur ist aus Bronze.

Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin was born on 8 July 1838 in Constance on Lake Constance. He studied mechanical engineering, chemistry and political science. Count von Zeppelin served in the military of the Kingdom of Württemberg, and in 1858 became cavalry officer. He undertook military study trips abroad and there he first experienced the use of hot air balloons for military reconnaissance purposes, an experience that was to shape Zeppelin's further life. Count von Zeppelin took part in the German War in 1866 and in the German-French War in 1870-71. Since 1873 he dealt with the development of airships.
The monument stands in front of the Graf-Zeppelin-Haus, which was also named after him.
It is now used as a cultural and congress center of the city Friedrichshafen.
With a binoculars and a stick in the other hand, the statue looks south-east at the harbor and the lake. The pedestal is simply made of a stone, the figure is made of bronze.
