This Elm tree at the west edge of the Alabama State Capitol grounds is a third generation offspring tree from the American Elm at Cambridge Massachusetts under which George Washington took command of the American army.

A plaque underneath the tree reads as follows:

took command of the American army under grandparent of this Elm Cambridge Mass., July 3, 1775
