This sign of history created by the Tannehill Furnace and Foundry Commission explains and interprets an interesting old cottin gin and sheltering structure behind the Alabama Iron industry Museum as follows:
"MAY PLANTATION COTTON GIN HOUSE
Once part of the 4000 acre May Plantation near Knoxville, in Greene County TN; built by William Pace May (1823-1876) and last operated 1912.
Donated by Margaret Bay Jicks, Kissimee Florida, and the May family in memory of her father, John Milton May, Sr., (1871-1933), first operator of this gin house….
