Lamar Wholesale Supply, Inc. opened The Light Bulb Shop to the public on September 1st, 1986. The 13-foot tall figure was created in the 1990s.

According to Light Bulb Shop workers the head resembles that of the owner Edwin McGary.

McGary never imagined the lightbulb business would grow like it has when he founded Lamar Wholesale Supply in 1981. Along with two employees, he sold lightbulbs wholesale to homebuilders and corporations. Five years later, he branched out, started dealing directly to consumers and opened The Lightbulb Shop, with about 500 retail items in boxes in the middle of the floor.
