The accident causing Gibbins's death was reported in the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate on the same day. Gibbins' name was spelt incorrectly by the newspaper as Gibbons. The article is reproduced here in part:

THREE KILLED BY GAS
12 Others Affected
Port Kembla

Three men are dead and two are in hospital through being overcome by carbon monoxide gas at Port Kembla to-day. Ten other men were affected, but after treatment were able to go home. The dead are John William Gibbons (sic), 36, single, of Wollongong, John McLellan, 28, married of Kiama and William John Young, 23, married
of Thirroul. It is believed Gibbons and McLellan lost their lives in an endeavour to help their mates who were overcome by the gas.
