Informationen zur Heiligen Jahr und den Heiligen Pforten
Heilige Pforten
- Lateranbasilika (Papstbasilika)
- Petersdom
- Basilika Santa Maria Maggiore (Papstbasilika)

Information on the Holy Year and the Holy Doors
Holy Doors
Holy Doors are special doors to churches, which are solemnly opened only in a holy year. Otherwise they are closed. Such permanent Holy Doors are only available at the following five churches:
- Papal Archbasilica of St. John in Lateran
- Papal St. Peter's Basilica
- Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major
- Papal Basilica of St. Paul outside the walls
In 1122 the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela (additionally to the four churches above) received the privilege to establish a Holy Door by Pope Callixt II. This is also opened in addition to the Holy Years in the years when the birthday of St. James (July 25th) falls on a Sunday.
For the Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis enabled the bishops to establish Holy Doors for churches. This is a unique process in the history of the Church. However, the decree declares that the gates may only be established at the bishop's churches, the concathedrals or at a churches of outstanding importance.

Holy Year
The history of the "Holy Years" has a very long tradition. Their origins are based on different traditions dating back to the year 200 BC. In 1300, the first "Holy Year" was proclaimed by Pope Boniface VIII. It was proclaimed to give pilgrims who came to Rome the absolution. Originally, a "Holy Year" should be followed every 100 years. However, the periods were increasingly shortened. Today, a "Holy Year" takes place every 25 years (for the last time in 2000).
In addition, the popes can also announce special "Holy Years".
