An article outlining his death was published in the Illawarra Mercury on 6 July 1917.

It states in part:

Thomas Stevenson, of Tarrawanna, was fatally injured at the Corrimal Colliery on Monday. It appears that about 10.20 a.m. Stevenson who was aged 15, was employed spragging empty skips about 2.5 miles from the tunnel mouth. A boy named Thomas Parkes was working with him on the side of the tunnel where the empties were running. John Harris, a wheeler, called out for some sprags. Parkes told deceased to take the sprags to Harris, who was about 130 yards away. Deceased crossed the tunnel to the side the full skips were running on, where he had some sprags hidden behind some props. Walter Palfreyman, a deputy, had just arrived at the spot at that time, and was standing alongside Parkes when they heard deceased call out two or three times, "Help."

Palfreyman immediately stopped the skips and Parkes ran to the leading skip and found it was off the rails and deceased was under the second clasping a sprag in his arms. He died about 10 minutes after.
