The substantial two storey mansion was built in 1887 in the Federation Queen Anne style of red-brick with horizontal stucco banding. The building has ornate two storeyed timber verandahs facing south and west with two gables over the front. An unusual feature is the Widows Walk.
Dilhorn was constructed for William Loton (later Sir William) and designed by J.J.Talbot-Hobbs, following his death in 1924 and his wife in 1827 there were various owners until it was purchased by the Commonwealth Department of Defence. For some years it was headquarters of several Army units including the W.A. Army Museum, following the transfer of the Army Museum to Fremantle the property was sold to private owners.
