An article covering his death was published in the Clarence and Richmond Examiner (Grafton) on 10 March 1908. The article states in part:

Mr. John Cronan, foreman of the Government quarry at Port Kembla, met with a fatal accident on Thursday. Mr. Cronan, in company with a workman named Niland, was climbing up the face of the quarry, on a tour of inspection. When up a distance of about 40 feet a large
piece of stone on which they were standing, weighing about 30 tons, broke loose, and carried both men with it. Niland was thrown clear, but Cronan was carried beneath the falling mass and buried.
