This pillar is situated on top of the 516 metre Hare Cairn, one of the many rolling heathery hills surrounding the Backwater Reservoir in the county of Angus. These hills are a prelude to the higher mountains to the north. The hill is situated west of the northern end of the reservoir where it is most easily reached. Once entirely surrounded by forestry, there is extensive clearing taking place on the eastern slopes.

STEEPNESS: Reached up the eastern side where the gradient is steep but not overly long. The summit area is reasonably level.

TERRAIN: Very mixed. The road up the western side of the reservoir gives way to a faint track heading through the forest. The climb up the northern edge of the forest is on grass, then the journey south along the summit ridge is on mainly heather.

ACCESSIBILITY: The nearest access is from the dam on the south side of the reservoir where it is around three miles to the summit heading north along the reservoir then the forest, west up the slope, then south along the hill top. The continuing felling on the eastern side does open up the possibility of reaching the summit directly from the reservoir, although there are no tracks from here.

NAVIGATION: The only difficulty is on the summit ridge where remnants of a fence should be followed south to the pillar.

DANGER: Keep to the faint path through the forest section to avoid any fallen trees. A fence needs to be climbed on reaching the ridge before heading south to the pillar.
