Pan is in the Greek mythology the shepherd god. It is a mixture of human body and the lower body of a ram or a goat.
He is the god of the forest and nature. The shepherds worship Pan, but are afraid of his sight. But as God of forests and meadows, they ask for protection for their flocks and offer him sacrifices.
Pan pursued the nymph Syrinx, who had fled before him. Their escape ended abruptly at the river Ladon, where they suddenly turned into a reed, which embraced Pan. When the wind blew into the pipe, plaintive sounds came forth. Pan did not want to lose the sounds, so he broke seven parts from the reed, one always slightly shorter than the previous, and tied them together. Thus he invented the flute of the shepherds (the panpipes), which he named Syrinx after the nymph.
