On July 3rd, 1866 more than 430 thousand soldiers clashed nearby Hradec Králové during the Austro-Prussian War. It was the largest battle on the Czech territory throughout its history. On 3rd July 1866, more than 16,000 of the dead and wounded remained on the battlefield. On of the episodes of the battle take place near village Strezetice, where 11,000 riders of the Prussian and Austrian armies clashed and within half an hour of a bloody struggle 1,600 troops were killed and wounded along with two thousand horses.
On July 1st, 2016 the monument dedicated to the equestrian encounter was unveiled on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the battle. The bronze monument was designed by Czech sculptor Petr Novák. The monument depicts a wounded war horse lying on the battlefield ahead of his rider, an officer Austrian army. The weight of the monument is 1135 kilograms, and its dimensions are 6 meters long, 1.5 meters wide and 2.5 meters high.
