The first cemetery was estabished in 1829 and until the closure of the seven cemeteries in 1899 almost all of the people who died in Perth including the early pioneers, the wealthy and prominent and the poor or unknown, were buried here.There were over 10,000 burials in the cemetery , but only 800 are known.Fron 1900 Karrakatta Cemetery became the main burial ground for the metropolitan area.
The first recorded burial was that of Private John Mitchell aged 22 of the 63rd Regiment who died on 6th January 1830 .
There were many causes of death in the colony including traditional childhood diseases such as measles, as well as tuberculosis and typhoid. Drowning was also a fairly common cause of death,
