A green plaque on the front of the Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life.

The plaque reads:
A merchant built this house in about 1490. The
large amount of visible and carved woodwork was a
sign of his wealth and status.
In 1921 the house was given to the town by
Prince Frederick Duleep Singh (1868 -
1926) to be used as a museum.

The Ancient House is one of the best examples of an early Tudor town house in East Anglia. A Short History of the Ancient House describes the architectural features of the house, the people who lived there and its different uses through time. (visit link) (pdf - 8213kB)
