On the vast undulating lawn, under the rays of a sunshine tempered by the shade of chestnut trees and plane trees, many rest, discuss, or roll in the grass. A relaxing place, halfway between the urban park and the meadow, this garden is also a pedestrian walkway that connects the city center to the Saint-Nicaise and Saint-Vivien districts.
Created in the early nineteenth century on the grounds adjoining the Saint-Ouen abbey, the gardens amaze by this mix of styles that invites to discovery. Located at the foot of the Hôtel de Ville, their historic "French" nucleus radiates around an ample round basin, aquatic case of a sculpture evoking the kidnapping of Dejanire by Centaure Nessus.
Because history and landscape are intimately mixed, the vestiges of the abbey wall have been highlighted and integrated into a "peat bog". The presence of the Marmousets' Portal in the exact reproduction of the Jellinge stone in Denmark, which lasted a thousand years, was offered to the City of Rouen on the occasion of the millennium of Normandy in 1911.
A historical garden, but also a contemporary space. Separated by an aisle of chestnut trees that extends the pedestrian street of the Abbe-de-l'Epée, an important playground brings together the toddlers and the biggest since the extension of the garden in 1982.
The lawn slopes gently down to the goldfish pond ... And in the background, the bedside of the Abbey Saint-Ouen completes giving the decor a little country air.

Sur la vaste pelouse vallonnée, sous les rayons d’un soleil tempéré par l’ombre des marronniers et des platanes, nombreux sont ceux qui se reposent, discutent ou se roulent dans l’herbe. Lieu de détente, à mi-chemin entre le parc urbain et la prairie, ce jardin est également un passage piétonnier qui relie le centre-ville aux quartiers Saint-Nicaise et Saint-Vivien.
Créés au début du XIXe siècle sur les terrains jouxtant l’abbatiale Saint-Ouen, les jardins étonnent par cette mixité des styles qui invite à la découverte. Situé au pied de l’Hôtel de Ville, leur noyau historique "à la française" rayonne autour d’un ample bassin rond, écrin aquatique d’une sculpture évoquant l’enlèvement de Déjanire par le Centaure Nessus.
Parce qu’histoire et paysage sont intimement mêlés, les vestiges du mur d’enceinte de l’abbaye ont été mis en valeur et intégrés à une "tourbière". Notons également la présence près du Portail des Marmousets de la reproduction exacte de la pierre de Jellinge au Danemark, vieille d’un millier d’années, offerte à la Ville de Rouen à l’occasion du millénaire de la Normandie en 1911.
Un jardin historique donc, mais également un espace contemporain. Séparée par une allée de marronniers qui prolonge la rue piétonne de l’Abbé-de-l’épée, une importante aire de jeux réunit les tout-petits et les plus grands depuis l’agrandissement du jardin en 1982.
La pelouse descend ensuite en pente douce vers le bassin aux poissons rouges… Et en arrière-plan, le chevet de l’abbatiale Saint-Ouen achève de donner au décor un petit air de campagne.
