La fontaine qui en occupe le centre porte son portrait sculpté par David d'Angers.
C'est une fontaine en pierre, ronde. En son centre, une pyramide s'élève et supporte deux cannons qui s"opposent sur deux faces. Sur une face, on peut voir le profil de Jacques-Antoine Manuel. Sur un autre coté, on peut lire des paroles célèbres dites par ce dernier.

Jacques-Antoine Manuel (1775 - 1827)
Avocat de profession, et homme politique libéral du début du XIXe siècle. Pures racines Barcelonnettes, il s’enrôla dans l’armée d’Italie et son courage lui a valu de devenir officier. Il fût sous le commandement de Bonaparte. Suite à une blessure de guerre il fût ramené à la vie civile où il devint avocat à Aix-en-Provence, sa réputation grandissante l’amena à s’intéresser à la politique.
Élu député en 1815 presque contre son gré, il accepta tout de même sa mission. Son désir de préserver les acquis de la Révolution, et ses discours virulents irritèrent les royalistes, alors majoritaires à la Chambre. Sa passion lui valut de se faire expulser de la Chambre des Députés, « manu militari » en se faisant ovationner par la foule.
Au lendemain de son expulsion, il revint a la Chambre et prononça sa fameuse phrase « M. Le Président, j’ai annoncé hier que je ne cèderai qu’à la violence, aujourd’hui je viens tenir ma parole » ; L’on peut lire cette phrase sur l’actuelle Place Manuel de Barcelonnette, inaugurée en 1934, ainsi que la mention « Bras, tête et cœur tout était peuple en lui ».

Jacques-Antoine Manuel (1775 - 1827)
Lawyer by profession, and liberal politician of the beginning of XIXe century. Pure Barcelonet roots, he enlisted in the army of Italy and his courage earned him to become an officer. He was under the command of Bonaparte. Following a war injury he was brought back to civilian life where he became a lawyer in Aix-en-Provence, and his growing reputation led him to take an interest in politics.
Elected deputy in 1815 almost against his will, he still accepted his mission. His desire to preserve the achievements of the Revolution, and his virulent speeches, irritated the royalists, then majority in the Chamber. His passion led him to be expelled from the Chamber of Deputies, "manu militari" by being ovated by the crowd.
The day after his expulsion, he returned to the Chamber and pronounced his famous phrase "Mr. President, I announced yesterday that I will yield only to violence, today I come to keep my word"; One can read this sentence about the present Place Manuel de Barcelonnette, inaugurated in 1934, as well as the mention "Bras, head and heart all was people in him".
