Located about 100 miles southwest of Oklahoma City, Cyril is a small agricultural community of about 1045 residents. We have come to learn that EVERY town, regardless of its size, has something to show a visitor. We were pleasantly surprised to see this expression of the citizens' sense of local history.
The area is about 1,000 square feet, located behind the downtown businesses, on 2nd Street (Highway 277). The area is surrounded by a brick wall about 18 inches high, and has two small areas with trees and shrubs.
The Plaza contains a small metal gazebo, a brick wall with a mural showing the town's history, and a time capsule buried in the Bicentennial year 1976, to be opened in 2076. The concrete patio has a granite inset which states: "Cyril, Oklahoma Established September 21, 1907". On the mural is a company sign "APCO" which refers to the oil refinery that was a mainstay of this town from the early 1920s to 1984. A plaque on the mural recounts the history of this town.
While we stood studying the mural, and enjoying the expressions of town pride, we were approached by a local citizen who was pleased by our interest. If you find yourself in this part of the state, stop here and enjoy the local flavor.
