The Cathedral was built around the original 1843 brick church. The old church was used until the new Cathedral was completed, and then the old church was demolished and removed through the Bourke Street entrance doors.
The nave of the new Cathedral was built in 1871. The building of the transept, sanctuary, sacristy and tower began in 1887. The completed Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul's was blessed by Cardinal Moran on 29 June 1890.
Andrea Stombucco designed the first stage of the Cathedral and Charles Spadaccini completed the second. It is cruciform and of traditional Gothic design, made principally from local green porphry stone with dressings of Marulan sandstone.
