A black walnut tree grown from a slip of George Washington's black walnut tree from his home at Mount Vernon Virginia grows on the east side of the Mississippi State capital grounds in Jackson.
A plaque inset in a concrete liner under the tree reads as follows:
"This marker, erected here February 22, 1949, marks this tree which was grown from a slip of the black walnut tree at Mount Vernon, home of George Washington. The tree was planted February 22, 1932 by the Ralph Humphries chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Boy Scouts of Jackson, Mississippi."
