In the 17th century, the college of the Jesuits is one of the most frequented in France. The expulsion of the Jesuits in 1762 did not close his destiny: he then became the Lycee of Rouen, with the Law of 1802, and then the Lycee Corneille in 1873.
The Upper Normandy Region inherited the establishment and its adjoining chapel at the time of the transfer of competences of the State to the Regions with regard to the responsibility of the lycées, during the 1986 Decentralization Laws.
The chapel is a synthesis between the ending Gothic style and the classical architecture. The building is constructed according to a Latin cross plan oriented north / south. The first two chapels on the south side are atrophied, conversely to the chapels on the north side.
At the crossing of the transept, the chapels are surmounted by galleries.
The façade is classical in style: the door is framed by two fluted Doric columns and a metaphor and triglyph entablature, the upper level is opened by a semicircular bay, the façade is crowned with a pediment. The statues of Saint Louis, Charlemagne, Ignace of Loyola and Saint Francis of Assisi are arranged in niches arranged on both sides of the door and the bay.
This building has been the subject of recent important works with the aim of being transformed into an auditorium which would be operational by the end of 2015. This project, costing 6 million euros, is entrusted to the Bordeaux architectural firm King Kong [archive ].
The planned capacity of this space is 600 to 700 spectators. The artistic programs would complement those of the Théâtre des Arts in Rouen and this in an exceptional setting for classical and sacred music.
