In the early 1920s the government of Newfoundland decided to issue a new set of postage stamps featuring some of the province’s natural beauty, landmarks and outlying communities. A photograph of this waterfall was chosen as one of the designs and it appeared on the highest value of the set.
I have seen this stamp included on lists of stamps with errors in their design. The stated reason for this error is that the stamp’s image is the reverse of the photograph on which it is based. Well, I have seen the photograph (in the form of an old post card) and I have also seen the falls and I’m happy to report that there is nothing wrong with the design of this stamp.
This waterfall is one of three separate falls that occur where the Topsail River flows down over a small escarpment just before emptying into Conception Bay. A portion of this river was diverted in 1983 in order to power a small hydro-electric plant built nearby. But no need to fret – there’s still plenty of water flowing over the falls.
