Here was fired the first gun for Texas Independence Oct. 2, 1835
Erected by the children of Gonzales City Schools Apr. 21, 1903
Story behind the marker:
On September 29, 1835, the citizens of Gonzales buried a 6 lb cannon to keep it from the 150 Mexican dragoons sent to demand it. On October 2, it was mounted on ox-cart wheels, loaded with chains and scrap iron, and moved to George W. Davis' Peach Orchard where it was fired at the Mexican dragoons.
