In Greek mythology, the Nymph Salmacis was naiad that rejected the the ways of the Greek goddess Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, childbirth, virginity and protector of young girls, in favor of spending a life of vanity and idleness. Her attempted rape of Hermaphroditus makes her the only nymph who was a rapist in the Greek mythological.
The sculpture of Nymph Salmacis is a bronze copy of the marble sculpture by Monaco born artist François Joseph Bosio that is on display in the Louvre in Paris, France and was based upon the figure in the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Bodum, Turkey.
A marble plaque with gold lettering on the top of the front of the basin is inscribed:
