La première mention du nom de Gargas date de 992 sous la forme de Gargatio.

Cette commune est composée de vingt-deux hameaux dont celui de Perrotet, à 2 km au sud ouest du village.

Ce lavoir, en parfait état, juste avant l'entrée du village est couplé à une fontaine basse, abreuvoir daté de 1869 mais rien n'indique si cette date concerne le lavoir et la fontaine ou uniquement la fontaine.

This washhouse, in perfect condition, just before the entrance to the village is coupled with a low fountain, watering place dated 1869 but there is no indication whether this date concerns the wash house and the fountain or only the fountain.
