The Ponca City Library is located in a beautiful WPA-constructed building with Spanish architecture. In the 1980's, as the library grew a large addition was added to the west side. On an elevated patio area in front of the west entrance to the library stands this sculpture of two children.
Jo Saylors sculpted this piece to grace the entrance of the Library’s new addition. School children participated in a contest to name the new statue, and the winning name was “Through the Eyes of a Child.”
This is a bronze sculpture located on a square brick platform. The two children are sitting on the ground surrounded by books. An older girl has a book open on her lap, and a young boy sitting to her right is looking back over his shoulder at her.
Jo Saylors' artwork features children, wildlife and Western themes, and her goal is to show a moment in time that connects with the viewer's emotions. The following link is from a Tulsa World newspaper article from 1990 which covers Jo Saylors and her work. (
