The museum is on the site of a former canal and river port. This major port complex, developed from 1795 as the link between the canal network, the River Mersey and later the Manchester Ship Canal.

Although the inland canal network used relatively small canal boats, the boats that entered into the port from the River Mersey, called Mersey Flats, were much larger and goods were trans shipped between them.

Canal boats still pass through the port complex but these days are usually only leisure boats.

The rest of the port complex buildings are used as the museum buildings which houses 68 different historic boats.

The Galley restaurant is near to a hotel, a craft shop and a canal lock that connects the Shroshire Union Canal to the much larger Manchester Ship Canal. Many people therefore pass this location and can visit these anchors.

Excellent views of large ocean going vessels can be seen passing along the Manchester Ship Canal.
