Benedict of Nursia (around 480 - 21st of March, 547) was a hermit, abbot and order founder. He founded around 529 on Monte Cassino near Naples the first cloister of the Benedictines. In the orthodox, Armenian and Catholic church he is revered as a saint. Also in the Protestant and Anglican church he is valid as an important religious witness.

The full-size basalt statue stands in a niche of the gate house of the old Cistercian's abbey Heisterbach.
Saint Benedikt of Nursia reminds with the queue-poisoned mug of the Christ's word of the strength of the faith: "If they drink something deadly, it will not damage to them". The legend tells that one had wanted to poison him.

The baroque gate building of the old Cistercian's abbey Heisterbach was built in 1750 during its last period of bloom under the abbot Augustin Mengelberg (abbot from 1748 to 1763).
