The first official AT sign we saw as we hiked up to the summit of Springer Mountain appears to be being eaten by a tree. The sign is a few yards up the trail from the parking area at Springer Mountain.
The sign reads as follows:
"APPALACHIAN NATIONAL SCENIC TRAIL
Over 2200 miles maintained by local wilderness trails clubs
Foot Travel Welcome
Bicycles, vehicles, horses and packstock prohibited
The Appalachian Trail is to be managed and protected under the National Trails System Law"
