On 30th April 1942 a de Havilland Flamingo R2764 was on a secret mission carrying four Russian military officers in preparation for a visit by the Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov. Molotov was to fly to London and Washington in May to negotiate the opening of a second front against Nazi Germany and the signing of an Anglo-Soviet Treaty of Alliance. The aircraft flew from RAF Hendon to RAF Tealing and on to RAF East Fortune. On the return leg from East Fortune to Hendon the starboard engine failed and caught fire. The engine and starboard wing detached, damaging the tail in the process. The aircraft fell out of the sky and crashed at Great Ouseburn, just behind Vine House. Due to the sensitive nature of the mission the crash was kept secret at the time.

The plaque reads

“In memory of

P/O Iain Ramsay RAFVR, Sgt James Smith DFM, F/Sgt Alan James Stripp DFM, LAC James Lewis, S/Ldr Kenneth Edwards, F/Lt Francis William Wilton, Hero of the Soviet Union Major Sergey Asyamov, Major Petr Baranov, Colonel Grigory Pugachev, Major Boris Shvetcov.

Who lost their lives when De Havilland DH95 (Flamingo) R2764 crashed in the field behind Vine House on 30th April 1942

These Russian officers and Air Ministry staff were instrumental in the negotiation of the 1942 Anglo – Soviet Treaty”

The plaques were dedicated on 29th April 2012.
