To the side and separate from the maker is his tombstone. He practiced law in Tucson, was a Judge in New Mexico. He was Arizona's delegate to the Confederate Congress, resigned to become a member of the Confederate Cavalry in Arizona. After the Civil War he was Speaker of the House in the Arizona Territorial Legislature and served in the United States House of Representatives 1881 to 1885.
