Une première église Saint-Rémy, datée du XIIIème siècle et dont seule subsiste aujourd'hui la tour dite « Saint-Rémy », fut construite à l'origine au pied du coteau où se trouve le château. Celle-ci tomba cependant progressivement en ruines et c'est pour cette raison que l'on décida la construction d'une nouvelle église Saint-Rémy, plus au cœur de la ville.
C'est Thomas Bouchard, échevin et trésorier de la paroisse, qui en posa la première pierre en 1522. En 1545, le chœur gothique, entouré d'un déambulatoire et de chapelles rayonnantes est terminé et l'on perçoit déjà dans le décor, l'influence de la première renaissance française. Les travaux furent alors interrompus par les guerres de religion. Ils reprirent au début du XVIIème siècle, dans un esprit complètement nouveau, celui de la Contre-réforme catholique.
L'église de Rome cherche alors à reconquérir ses fidèles et le parti pris architectural en est le reflet : la largeur de la nef et la multiplication des chapelles permettaient en effet d'accueillir une large foule, tandis que la musique du Grand Orgue et la magnificence de l'autel majeur participaient de la volonté d'émouvoir et d'impressionner l'assemblée.
La façade achevée vers 1630, est marquée par une double influence, celle de la Renaissance à travers les références à l'Antiquité (frontons, pilastres, colonnes, superposition des ordres antiques sur la tour...) et celle des églises contemporaines, construites à Rome, par sa théâtralité et son aspect imposant. Une deuxième tour, jamais construite, aurait dû à l'origine lui rendre sa symétrie.
Les portails latéraux (1609 et 1643), en revanche, semblent encore marqués par le vocabulaire de la Renaissance française. À l'instar de Saint-Jacques, l'église Saint-Rémy fut sérieusement fragilisée par les guerres et destructions qui touchèrent la ville.

The façade, completed around 1630, is marked by a double influence, that of the Renaissance through the references to Antiquity (pediments, pilasters, columns, superimposition of the antique orders on the tower ...) and that of the contemporary churches built In Rome, by its theatricality and its imposing aspect. A second tower, never built, should originally have made it symmetry.
The lateral portals (1609 and 1643), on the other hand, still seem marked by the vocabulary of the French Renaissance. Like Saint-Jacques, the church of Saint-Remy was seriously weakened by the wars and destruction that touched the city.
