In 1867 the community of Ferryden made representations to the commissioners of Northern Lighthouses to have a light established at Scurdie Ness, which had been the scene of numerous shipwrecks.

Designed by David and Thomas Stevenson, the 39 metre high structure was first lit at 1800 hours on March 1st 1870.

A keeper was in residence until 1987 when the light became automated. Operated and maintained by the Northern Lighthouses Board, the light flashes (3) white every 20 seconds.

The lighthouse is situated just over a mile east of the village of Ferryden and can be reached along a walkable tarmac path.
