The Guildford Mechanics Institute was formed in 1862 and the foundation stone of the building laid on April 17th 1865 and opened on September 7th 1865.The Institute was designed by Richard Roach Jewell (Government Architech).
The original hall is a rectangular brick construction, in Flemish bond with a distinctive two tone pattern on the front facade, with a steeply pitched gable roof, in c1880 the front porch, caretakers flat and stage in the hall were added. A circular window is centred in the gable. Flanking the original front doors (now inside the porch) are two twelve pane sash windows, with arched fanlights above and rendered surrounds.
The building was later used as a library, theatre and an arts and craft centre, at present it is available for hire
