It has been placed to commemorate the short life of Liam Fitzgerald, a northern beaches surfer. The engraved inscription is:

"LIAM FITZGERALD
8 April, 1987 - 27 August, 2004.
Our Shining Light"

On the RealSurf Surfer's Forum there is a page dedicated to his memory: (visit link)

In this sundial the Gnomon is a stainless steel representation of an upturned surfboard fin. North is depicted by an "N" that is left raised, as are the "9", "12", and "3" of the hours on the southern side of the sundial. There are hourly lines engraved appropriately to indicate the time from the shadow cast.
