The 104th Infantry Regiment of the 26th Division was known as the "Yankee Division" served as federalized Massachusetts National Guard regiment with the U.S. Army during World War I. It was part of the first American unit ever to be decorated by a foreign power for bravery and conduct under fire in France during World War 1.

In April 1918, as part of the American Expeditionary Force, the troops of the 104th Infantry in were engaged in battle at Bois Brule, near Apremont in the Ardennes, France. Because of their bravery under fire, The French government awarded them its highest honor, the Croix de Guerre. It was the first time such an honor had ever come to an American unit. The members of Company E of the 104th U.S Infantry erected a memorial monument in Memorial Park with a bronze plaque which is inscribed:

1917 {YD} 1919
