The Hopewell Rocks provincial park is named for numerous rock formations caused by the slow erosion of the wind and rain coupled with the extraordinary tides of the Bay of Fundy. They are sometimes referred to as “flowerpot” rocks because many have trees and other vegetation growing on top. The action of the tides erodes the bottoms of the rocks more than the tops so they appear to be standing on pedestals.

Fanciful names have been given to several of these formations and if I’m reading the park map correctly, the one shown on the stamp is called “E.T.” after the movie. There was another formation called “Elephant Rock” because a portion of it looked like an elephant’s trunk but that part recently fell off and now it doesn’t resemble anything. Slow disintegration is a fate that awaits all these rock formations but don’t worry if you can’t get there tomorrow - geologists estimate that there is enough rock to last at least another 100,000 years.

Be sure to check the tide tables before visiting because at high tide, the rocks are only accessible by boat. The Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world and the difference between low and high tide can be seen quite dramatically at this park.
