Hopewell was essentially the early Warren County community called New Boston, which had competed with Warrenton for the distinction of the county seat in 1833. When the German Methodist Conference was seeking a location for its new orphanage and school, the residents of the area thought that a tow with a name such as Hopewell Academy could clinch the deal. They applied for a permit for a post office that would be located in this mercantile. [see photo gallery].
Alas, the German Methodist Conference decided to establish the orphanage and school in the east end of Warrenton. Then the U.S. Postal Service, which hands out the permits, denied the town's request, claiming that there was already a Hopewell Academy Post Office and it would be too confusing to have a second one with the same name, so the community became Hopewell instead.
This building [again see photo gallery] is often referred to as the Hopewell Academy, leaving passerbys with the impression that it wa a large school at one time. In another confusing local story, this was where former slave William Kunze learned his trade of chair making from his former owner from Germany, whose identity is unknown." ~ Images of America: Warren County, Dorris Keeven-Franke, 2011, page 55.

"A village in the west-central part of Charrette Township. It was one of the first settled towns in the county, but the exact date of settlement is not known. It was established by 1876 as Hopewell Academy to distinguish it from Hopewell in Washington County. The post office of this name was discontinued sometime between 1904 and 1910. Hopewell is a stock name for American towns and may have been borrowed from any one of the Hopewells in a dozen different states. The ultimate origin must have been idealistic. The choice of "Academy" may have been made because it is thought that an academy was proposed here about the time of the establishment of the post office, but the school was never built. It is now usually known as Hopewell, although the longer form is sometimes still heard. This shortening is a natural one since there is no longer any post office to cause confusion."
