Harriet Tubman Born into slavery, ca. 1820, in Dorchester County, MD. She gained her freedom in 1849 when she escaped to Philadelphia and became one of the foremost "conductors" on the Underground Railroad.
In 1858, Harriet Tubman acquired the house in Auburn, NY from U.S. Senator and Secretary of State William Seward, a supporter of the underground railroad, in a special arrangement for $1,200. Tubman then moved her parents into the home from St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. In 1860 she returned to Maryland to rescue slaves and left the house in Auburn in the care of her parents. During the Civil War Tubman served as a nurse in Maryland and continued her rescue efforts. Tubman returned to Auburn after the War and lived in the home until her death in 1913.
In 1886 the wooden house was destroyed by fire. Her second husband Nelson Davis, a brick maker, and helped rebuild her house by replacing the original wood structure with bricks, giving it its current appearance.
In 1896 Tubman bought at 25 acres of adjacent land and subsequently with the financial support of the A.M,E. Zion Church constructed the Harriet Tubman Home for the Elderly.
