3:59am. 28January1978. A hotel for transients is quiet - too quiet. Was a hotplate left on? Maybe someone fell asleep with a lit cigarette. A spark - a flame - a fire in an old hotel built in 1891. A fire such as this is devastating anytime of year, but this is Kansas City - in January. 5 above zero actual temperature. The first fire engine gets there quickly as the fire station is only a block away. The fire quickly gets out of control. A second alarm. A third. Then a fourth. Many people are trapped in this old tenderbox of a hotel. Several people jump from fifth and sixth floor windows rather than burn. One complete side of the hotel is a total loss - 20 people loss their lives. This is still the largest loss of life in any fire in Kansas City. It is said that the remaining portion of the hotel - now upscale apartments is haunted by those who are still trying to escape the horrors of 28January1978.

The Coates House was a hotel that opened in 1867 and had some famous guests, including three presidents: William McKinley, Grover Cleveland and Theodore Roosevelt. A fire in 1978 killed at least 16 folks in the homeless shelter the building had by then become. Now, folks say shadowy figures move about in the building, make strange noises and tinker with appliances.
