His founders were Dr. Pedro van der Laan, Dr. José Thomaz Sousa Martins and de Kessler Baron with the suport of several personalities of that time like the King D. Fernando and the Poet Bocage.
Lots of animals came from Africa and Brazil and that has contributed to a vast colection of animals trough the years. Several governors of the overseas ex-provinces have enriched the zoo´s colection with exotic and not known species.
The independence of the ex-colonies in 1974 has broken this suport to the zoo and the renewal of the animals go more dificult. The number of visitors has also fall forcing the zoo to change his management and search for new forms of financing itself.
In 1990 the new policy of the administration decided to modernize the zoo creating new areas, improving the animal colection and his wellfare.
