In 1864, delegates from the three maritime provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island met to discuss the possibility of uniting into a single entity to gain political strength. When the province of Canada (Quebec and Ontario) caught wind of this, they sent a delegation of their own to float the even grander idea of a larger confederation that included them as well. Although nothing concrete was decided at this conference, it is viewed as the starting point which led to eventual confederation and the foundation of modern Canada.

The conference took place between September 1st and September 7th at Province House, the legislative building of Prince Edward Island. On the morning of September 6th, before getting down to the business of the day, the delegates assembled in front of Government House (located a short distance away) for a photograph. This photograph became an important artifact of the conference in subsequent years and eventually found its way onto a postage stamp issued in 1935. For my photograph, I chose to sit where the Right Honourable Sir John A. MacDonald sat.

Government House was constructed between 1832 and 1834 as the residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, then a colony of Great Britain. It serves mainly ceremonial functions and is also where many visiting dignitaries stay while in Charlottetown. During the summer months it’s opened for public tours.
