"Un panneau explicatif réalisé par le conseil général du Calvados présente le monument. On y lit : « L'homme préhistorique a laissé des traces de passage sur la commune, le menhir la Pierre Debout témoignent d'une présence, de même qu'un tumulus néolithique, datant de 3 500 à 4 000 ans avant Jésus-Christ. Le menhir situé au bord de la route de Reviers à Bayeux (ancienne voie romaine) se trouve tout près du calvaire. La Pierre Debout à laquelle se rattache un culte religieux, est brisée en 1845 ». La base du menhir disparut après cette chute et pour respecter sa hauteur d'origine, le monolithe fut scellé sur un autre bloc en béton. On peut voir une cupule au sommet du mégalithe. Plusieurs sépultures mérovingiennes ont été découvertes à proximité.
La pierre taillée de façon très régulière et sa situation sur une ancienne voie romaine pourraient indiquer qu'il s'agirait non pas d'un menhir mais plutôt d'un élément de bornage. Le long de cette même voie antique on peut voir la borne milliaire du Manoir et d'autres “menhirs” qui seraient en fait des bornes, comme la pierre levée du clos Saint Gilles à Creully, le menhir des Planches à Amblie et la Pierre Debout à Reviers.
Le menhir des Demoiselles fait l’objet d’un classement au titre des monuments historiques depuis 18894. Les alentours du menhir sont recensés comme site archéologique par arrêté du 18 avril 1914."
