Big Book Group - Methodist Episcopal Church - Shawnee, OK - This Old Church on Waymarking.com

This former Methodist Episcopal church is an eye-opener. Built in 1917, it is a massive 2-story plus exposed basement building of dark brick with a castle-like appearance. It stands on the northeast corner of 9th Street and South Philadelphia.

Originally established as a Methodist Episcopal Church, the building is currently in use by the Shawnee Big Book Group of Alcoholics for their daily meetings. A cornerstone placed high on the wall of the turret to the right of the entrance reads "First Methodist Episcopal Church 1917".

The large canted entrance on the southwest has a wide 19-step staircase with brick sidewalls. It leads to a double wood door entrance in a projected entrance bay. Flanking this entrance, as well as at the southeast and northwest corners of the building are large 8-sided turrets. Windows on the 2nd and third levels are stained glass on the street sides.

The exposed basement level is separated from the sanctuary level by a concrete belt course. The third floor 5-window unit has an arched lintel made of light colored soldier bricks. Light soldier bricks also extend around the front two sides of the building.

The roof is hipped, and all wood-framed windows are painted white. This building really catches the eye and has many points of visual interest. Brick pilasters between the window units and at each of the eight sides of the turrets rise above the roof line with masonry coping. This is a beautiful building!
