This missile display is among several other military items in Woodland Veterans Park. Though aircraft of many varieties are often displayed, it is not often one sees a missile on display.
The AIM-7 series Sparrow missiles are radar-guided medium-range weapons. This model began use in 1958 and was used through the 1990's in Vietnam, Afghanistan and other fields of operation.
The missile is 12 feet long and 8 inches in diameter with a wing span of 3 ft. 4 inches. The launch weight is 500 lbs. This missile is mounted on a four foot high concrete base, with an inscription engraved on a black granite marker, which reads:
"AIM-7 Sparrow Air-to-Air Missile / The AIM-7 Sparrow is a radar-guided, supersonic, air-to-air missile with a high-explosive warhead operated by the United States Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps. In 1958 the Sparrow Missile entered the service. It was used in Vietnam, Afghanistan and other conflicts. / "RETURN WITH HONOR".
