Oak Glen, is also known as Julia Ward Howe house, dates back to 1850. This section became the rear ell of the home. The home was the summer residence of Dr Samuel Gridley Howe and Julia Ward. Additions were made to the original small house, creating a T shaped structure thru the 1870's.

Julia and Samuel both came from prominent families in New York and Boston. Samuel was educated at Brown University and Harvard, where he received his medical degree. Both Julia and Samuel were avid anti-slavery supporters. Samuel died in 1876 and Julia remained in the house until her death in 1910.
