The inscription on the Waugh family tomb records the death of their son, George, who drowned. Tragically, he was their oldest child with the others having died in childhood.

The inscription on the tomb reads:

Here rest
their first born son
who died xx Aug 1830 aged one month
and Mary Walker their daughter
who dies xx May xxxx aged 7 years
and Isabella Foster their daughter
who died 18 Feb xxxx aged 1x years
and George their son
who was drowned while bathing in the sea
at Slapton Devon on x4 Aug 188x aged 34

"x" represents unclear letters/numbers in the inscription.

The tomb is a Grade II listed structure with the entry at the Historic England website telling us:

Memorial to George and Mary Waugh, died 1873 to 1886 respectively. Statuary marble figure of a seated woman mourning over an urn and holding a bowl, over the inscription `I am the Resurrection and the Life`. Tall rectangular plinth with inscription in lead letters. Epitaph on south side commemorates Fanny Waugh, first wife of the Pre-Raphaelite painter William Holman Hunt, who died in Florence in 1866.
